Reliefs, Objects and Sculptures from the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Collection

From 21 October 2012 till April 2013

This exhibition, featuring some 50 reliefs, material constructions and installations from the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Collection, shows just how differently artists enlist their materials when trying to create space and volumes. This selection of works goes back to the 1960s, when there was a broad consensus in sculpture to embrace new fields of action, which have lost none of their relevance to this day. Apart from classic artistic media such as paper, canvas and wood, the artists have also turned increasingly to industrially manufactured materials and mundane utility objects from the world around them in order to structure surfaces and explore space. The three-dimensional object not only emphasises the very materiality of the artwork, but - as either a means of penetrating space, a virtual space, or an integral element in shaping the whole - also allows very different notions of space to be articulated.

Artists (selection): Yaacov Agam, Thomas Bayrle, Alexandre da Cunha, Vanessa Henn, Imi Knoebel, Paolo Scirpa, Turi Simeti, Peter Weber, Martin Willing
