In a windowless room deep inside the building, the Nuremberg artist Inge Gutbrod has set up a lounge for both eyes and ears: a concentrated atmospheric situation comprising sculptural elements, coloured light and muted music. Even while outside the room, a warm, reddish-orange light lures one inside, where one is greeted above all by a large light box consisting of numerous square tiles made of wax. This is the source of this enticing light. Odourless paraffin is the material of choice for this artist, who values not only the many uses it can be put to but above all its translucency. The artist in person has individually cast each of the total of 256 wax modules in this large glowing picture. That is why each square has its own distinctive and lively surface structure, and the feeling as though it and every other square was lit up by its own personal cone of light. Inge Gutbrod has a weakness for walk-through installations where the visitor can step inside and take an active part. Here in MUSEUM RITTER she has created a homey suite with rotating wax spheres, a carpet, and comfy seats, so that the visitors can sit down and engross themselves in a relaxed study of art. |
