Timm Ulrichs & Gerda Ridler
Timm Ulrichs is one of the most imaginative representatives of contemporary German art. His wide-ranging œuvre breaks the moulds, steps over the barriers, defies the genres and does not fit the established pigeon-holes of art history. To mark the occasion of his 70th birthday MUSEUM RITTER is honouring the artist with a large solo exhibition. Some eighty works from the past fifty years give a rich overview of the manifold creative potential of the “Total Artist”

Looking back on Ulrichs’s heterogeneous body of work, one can roughly distinguish two directions amidst all the various themes, media and techniques. In his own words: “My breast is inhabited by twin souls: the one a dadaist and the other a constructivist.” It seems obvious for a museum that has specialized in the square in art and thus in concrete-constructivist approaches to choose groups of work that reference Timm Ulrichs’s penchant for constructivism.

| His dadaist and egocentric works will be presented at the exhibition in a film portrait, allowing the audience to gain an overall picture of this multi-facetted artist. Over the past 50 years Timm Ulrichs has produced an oeuvre that is as broad as it impressive and that captivates above all by the richness of its ideas. With some 80 works, this “Look back to the future” presents the main phases of his work from 1959 to 2009. |

The exhibition will be accompanied by a film portrait and an audio guide in which Timm Ulrichs talks about art in general and his works in particular.
In addition the exhibition will be accompanied by a German-English catalogue with texts by Andreas Bee, Thomas Knubben, Astrid Mayerle, Gerda Ridler and Thomas Wagner.
