Ever since she embarked on her career, Vera Röhm has worked with a stock of simple geometrical and stereometrical forms. For this she often combines wood and Perspex to create aesthetic compositions of great elegance.
Measuring over 2 ½ metres in height, this stele entitled “Doppelergänzung” (= Double Addition) from the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Colletion lives from the tense interplay between its materials, wood and acrylic “Plexiglass”. The work comes from a series of pieces by Vera Röhm entitled as a whole “Ergänzungen” (= additions). The central section consists of a rectangular block of elm wood whose naturally broken ends have been augmented by means of Plexiglass. The two contrasting materials change seamlessly from the one to the other. Vera Röhm deliberately teases out the full weight of the contrasts: she juxtaposes wood - as an organic, natural substance - with Plexiglass, an inorganic, synthetic product. Opaque material meets up with transparency; and rough, dramatically jagged fissures encounter smooth surfaces and precise stereometric physicality.

In these and other works Vera Röhm has arrived at her very own amalgam of nature and art. But how exactly she manufactures her works remains her secret. The fact that she uses ”Plexiglass” goers back to her family history, because it was Vera Röhm’s grandfather who invented the substance in the 1930s.
