Inge Gutbrod’s artworks are by turns shiny or shimmering matt, brightly coloured or in thousands of shades of white, pocket-sized or voluminous, and may be a picture, a sculpture or architecture... but one thing they all have in common: they are made of wax. Paraffin wax - industrially manufactured, neutral in colour and free of any odour - is the perfect medium for the Nuremberg-based artist. What Inge Gutbrod particularly likes about this material is its neutrality, the host of uses it can be put to, and the way the substance allows itself to be melted, to be coloured, and to be fashioned into any number of shapes. But what is most important to the artist is its translucency. This quality of the paraffin wax provides her with the visual design element for her walk-in sculptures and wax objects.
“Sunny Honey” is the title of her large light box made up of 256 square wax tiles. The size of the tiles corresponds exactly to that of common or garden kitchen tiles. Each one has been individually coloured and moulded, which means that each tile differs from all the others in its surface structure, giving every single wax tile its own, almost organic character. This produces a delightful contrast to the strict geometrical arrangement of the individual modules. The dominant colours in the light boxes, which are illuminated using cold light tubes, are warm reds, oranges and yellows, which bathe the surrounding exhibition space in a pleasantly warm and sensual atmosphere. |
