Caution, Colour!

Artists in the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Collection on the Subject of Colour

10 October 2010 to 1 May 2011

Curators:
Marli Hoppe-Ritter and Dr. Barbara Willert

Colour is the big topic of this exhibition. Drawing on the stores of the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Collection, this presentation highlights a selection of “colour artists” with an overview of each person’s output. It will show the imagination and subtlety with which contemporary artists working with geometrical abstraction approach colour.
The concern here is not merely with colour as a sensory input, but also and above all with paint and colour as a creative vehicle made up of pigment and binding agent. Thus one of the main focuses of the exhibition is on works in which the pure physical presence of paint and colour plays a very central role.

Using exhibits from the Marli Hoppe-Ritter Collection, rounded off by a number of significant loans, the exhibition explores facets of (monochrome) colour painting. And it will give fascinating insights into a highly variegated realm in which the basic conventions of classic panel painting are not only respected and developed, but a times radically questioned and rejected.

Alongside a host works by internationally acclaimed artists, a number of newcomers will present interesting new approaches.

Selected artists of the exhibition:

Anne Appleby, Johannes Geccelli, Rupprecht Geiger, Kuno Gonschior, Gotthard Graubner, Imi Knoebel, Vera Molnar, François Morellet, Günter Umberg, Anselm Reyle, Reiner Seliger, Renate Wolff, Beat Zoderer
